Plot
Actor/filmmaker Vondie Curtis-Hall directs the made-for-TV biopic Redemption, based on a true story. Jamie Foxx plays Stan "Tookie" Williams, the founder of the notorious L.A. street gang the Crips. Incarcerated at San Quentin on a multiple-murder charge, Tookie focuses his leadership abilities on running the prison. Meanwhile, Professor Barbara Becnel (Lynn Whitfield) tries to contact him for an interview as she researches her next book. However, he refuses to help her. When a fellow inmate passes him a dictionary, he starts a process of self education. Eventually, he becomes willing to talk to Becnel, leading him to a reformation and new career as a children's book writer and youth activist. Redemption was shown at the Sundance Film Festival before its television premiere on FX in 2004. — Andrea LeVasseur
